Training Health Workers

Educational Scholarships for Sisters and Members of Local Communities

Since 2012, CBH has provided scholarships for Sisters and members of the local communities near Rwibaale Health Center IV and Fort Portal. The Sisters have an enduring commitment to serving the disadvantaged in mission and government facilities, working within Uganda and other neighboring countries.  CBH has also provided scholarships for established healthcare workers in the region seeking higher levels of education, and individuals who are seeking entry healthcare fields.  To date, we have funded certificates, degrees and advanced training in nursing, medicine, and laboratory work.  We have also supported existing healthcare employees with training in supporting fields, such as administration and accounting.  CBH volunteers have mentored a number of these students pursuing nursing and technology degrees.

Continuing Medical Education in Uganda

CBH volunteers and visitors have rotated on patient services, provided Continuing Medical Education, and other trainings sessions for health professionals, medical residents, and other learners in clinics and hospitals. The training sessions are all co-designed with our Ugandan partners.  CBH is currently funding Ugandan OB/GYN residents including learning experiences in the communities and Birth Injury Camps.  To date, these have included residents are from Mother Kevin Postgraduate Medical School Nsambya, Uganda Martyrs University and from Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

Medical Education Abroad for U.S. Students in Health Professional Degree Programs

Health professional trainees from the United States have participated in educational experiences in hospitals and clinics managed by the Banyatereza Sisters and in a regional government hospital.  These experiences have been coordinated through the University of Michigan Global Reach program and affiliated schools at the University of Michigan.  Participants have been UM medical students and residents as well as UM students in other healthcare professions including public health, nursing, pharmacy and social work.
